As part of the comprehensive renovation of the Schaanwald reservoir, the entire structure was modernized and brought up to the latest technical standards. In addition to the structural renovation, all piping was replaced, creating ideal conditions for the integration of modern measurement technology.
Despite these optimal conditions for the traditional measurement method using magnetic-inductive flow measurement, a conscious decision was made in favor of ultrasonic clamp-on flow measurement. The decisive factor was, in particular, the measurement accuracy at low flow rates—a critical factor in the operation of drinking water systems.
The technology used enables non-contact measurement from the outside through the pipe wall. As a result, the existing infrastructure remains completely unaffected. Neither are the pipe’s hydraulic characteristics altered, nor is there any risk of contamination in the drinking water system. Another advantage lies in the additional measurement of water temperature via the speed of sound. Thus, two operating parameters are measured precisely and reliably with just one system.
The result is a flexible, low-maintenance, and sustainable solution that is ideally suited for both existing systems and newly renovated infrastructure.
The Project at a Glance
The Liechtenstein Unterland Water Supply (WLU) set clear requirements for the measurement technology to be used. The focus was on measurement accuracy and reliability at very low flow rates, ensuring drinking water hygiene, high operational reliability, and a durable, low-maintenance solution.

The clamp-on ultrasonic measurement technology used enables precise and reliable flow measurement without requiring any modifications to the piping. The sensors are mounted on the outside of the pipe, ensuring contactless and hygienically sound measurement.
