Dr. Jörg Rieckermann, EAWAG

In the past decades, it is estimated that about 50,000 to 60,000 rainwater treatment plants have been built in Switzerland, Austria and Germany. Although this corresponds to investments in the order of magnitude of approx. 50 billion EUR, there are only selectively reliable measurement data on the actual operating behaviour of these plants. Furthermore, operation is rarely adapted to changing conditions in the catchment area. Current studies and data evaluations indicate that the existing infrastructure is not being operated optimally. In his presentation, Jörg Rieckermann summarises current discussions on the value and benefits of measurement data from drainage networks and identifies deficits in practical implementation. Current projects to improve data quality are presented and it is discussed whether “intelligent sewer networks” can achieve added value for society.
